POLICY BRIEF: COVID-19 SURVEY

The Covid-19 baseline surveys, created by Seeds of Hope Uganda and CACTES Association, were administered in the Kalungu and Masaka Districts, in five villages consisting of 140 households.

The current policy approach of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uganda is extensively outlined in the National CoronaVirus Disease (COVID-19) Preparedness and Response Plan (March 2020 - June 2021). The Ugandan MOH focuses on eight key COVID-19 response pillars:

  1. Leadership, Stewardship, Coordination, and Oversight

  2. Case Management

  3. Continuity of Essential Services

  4. Strategic Information, Research & Innovation

  5. Community Engagement and Social Protection

  6. Surveillance and Laboratory

  7. Risk Communication and Special Mobilization

  8. Logistics and Operations

It is mentioned in the plan that the Government of Uganda (GoU), as of the 16th of March, 2020, is freezing public and private transport, outlawing mass gathering events, implementing overnight curfew, closing schools, and issuing a nationwide lockdown (as of the 24th of March).

PROGRAM EVALUATION: GIRLS LEAD PROJECT

The Girls Lead Project (GLP) hopes to raise money and awareness surrounding increased rates of teenage pregnancy in the Masaka district. GLP will support 30 pregnant girls and teenage mothers by providing legal, medical, and professional support.

Teenage pregnancy in Uganda is a major challenge and as such, the Girls Lead Project (GLP) hopes to raise money and awareness surrounding this issue. GLP is a one year project and may be extended upon securing additional funds. However, in the first year, GLP will support 30 pregnant girls and teenage mothers. The project will be implemented in the Masaka district due to the increase of gender based violence, and cases of child marriage that have taken place during the Covid 19 lockdown. The project will incorporate seven parishes; Nyendo, Kyabakuza, Kimanya, Bajja, Kaliiro Ward, Kiti and Bukulula. The indirect beneficiaries are the family members and babies of these teenage mothers.
